16. Bells

*Ding-Dong*

waited at the door to be greeted by your father

have you back by ten and treat you like his daughter

made sure to open up and help you into the passenger

moved the umbrella, meant to keep us from the water

*Ring-Ring*

our food was up after we waited by the window

like your fries crispy and the cold side of the pillow

between bites of dinner conversation did not dwindle

told you what our names meant and facts about sparrows

*Bong…Bong…Bong…Bong…Bong…Bong…Bong…Bong*

took our ice cream to a church with a sturdy bench

on the sidewalk of a city as charming as your smile

shared stories and laughed tears for while

forgot the umbrella, ran to the car, got drenched

*Ting-a-ling, Ting-a-ling*

your mother served us tea when I brought you back early

she said we’d remember this forever and left us at the table

was warmed by the tea, by you, though i nearly

lost you to the doubt of whether i was worthy or able

**

couldn’t hear the sounds over the excitement of the now

but felt the wait and love when you recited your vow

cherished the tears you gave me when you heard mine

rejoicing that our words are ringing through time

*Bing*

at the desk checking in to the suite with my sweet

bride and groom to a room, made sure you’re off your feet

covenant covered with the promise of devotion

reflecting on the sounds that carry us in motion
